Bio
I am a documentary and fine art photographer living in the Hudson Valley and NYC. My inspiration comes from the world around me and from life as it is lived. My focus is environmental portraiture and long-term projects, exploring themes of women's empowerment and resilience, family dynamics and the strength required of those that live in difficult circumstances or marginalized communities.
I grew up in a working-class family in Baltimore. We experienced periods of extreme hardship related to addiction issues, along with the emotional and financial instability that is endemic to this affliction. As a family we survived, even thrived, because we supported and cared for each other. Consequently, I am drawn to photograph individuals and families living outside of expected societal norms that prevail despite the odds. My work, while rooted in traditional documentary practices, draws on my own personal narrative and desire to connect.
I develop on-going relationships with those that I photograph that can last years, building trust over time. As I photograph the lives of others, I explore what it means to me “to belong” and the various ways the notions “home” and “family” can manifest. It is a visceral and mysterious, ultimately intimate, process to photograph another. My background as a former critical care nurse informs this approach. As a nurse it was essential to look beyond the surface and confront the pain often found in everyday life. As a photographer the same is true, while also seeking beauty and connection found in unexpected places.
